My students need basketballs for both practice and for their games, various training tools in order to improve their level of play and lastly a score board.

My Students

"Success is where opportunity and preparation meet." I am a teacher at a lower income school in Brooklyn and for the past few years the students at my school have been asking to have a basketball team. Last year I was able to give them the opportunity and now I could use some equipment to prepare.

Last year i started the basketball program at our school with just a boys varsity team and now we have expanded to a boys varsity, girls and a boys JV team.

Most of the children on these teams are from families that live in poverty and they cannot afford to place their kids in outside sports leagues so the league they play at in school is their only opportunity to participate in an organized team sports league.

My Project

So far this year i have been coaching 3 teams, 4 days a week and between the 3 teams we have been sharing 2 basketballs. I have bought a few basketballs with my own money but one deflated and another was stolen from my classroom. The kids show up to practice, ready to learn but with one ball it's extremely difficult to get a lot done. Sometimes my players will ask to bring a ball home on the weekends to practice and i hate having to say no to them so this way i wont have too. The other major request i have made is a scoreboard. I realize this is a lot of money but in our league the home team must be responsible for a scoreboard and we do not have one. The past 2 years i have borrowed scoreboards from other schools and local churches and have even brought in dry erase boards to keep the score of a game. Sometimes this embarrasses the kids so a scoreboard would help improve the look of our gym and the confidence of our players.

There are many kids on my teams that would never be able to have the opportunity to play in an organized sports league and I realize that if one or two of my players go onto play in High School or even college that would be amazing.

I am not coaching or requesting this equipment for that reason but because this league helps promote sports and even life skills such as sportsmanship, following rules, practice, respect, having a sense of being on a team and lastly winning and losing.
