My Students

I have the privilege of working with 20-25 creative, thoughtful, and imaginative second graders every year. We spend our days exploring and learning about everything from addition and subtraction to Chicago long ago, and everything in between. Each day my students enter my classroom excited to have a safe space where they can continue to grow.

The students in my classroom come from all over the world with varying experiences and backgrounds.

We use this diversity to learn from each other and engage in meaningful discussions about our world. Chicago is a wonderfully diverse city that allows my students to experience cultures from around the world right in their own classroom.

My Project

Children learn best by exploring the world around them and imagining all that it can be. When a child is engaged in a provocation station they are provoked by new ideas, thoughts, wonderings, interests, and creativity. During this exploration time, they can bring their new thoughts and ideas into our classroom learning with an open mind.

Hands-on learning stations with the blocks and magnatiles will allow children to discover and explore materials before we begin a larger project, giving them the chance to expand their own curiosity.

In much of our science learning, we take a project-based approach to learning. While the concepts we cover as a class are the same, each child has their own way to express their learning about that topic. These figurines and games will help provoke the children's ideas about the plants and animals around them, during one of our first units of study on relationships in ecosystems.

During math workshop, students have the opportunity to explore varies hands-on materials to extend their learning. All children learn differently. Some excel at numbers on paper, while others learn best with hands-on manipulatives. The materials in this project will help the children in my room gain an understanding of numbers, geometry, volume, and mass.

All of these materials will greatly expand the inquiring minds of the children in my room for many years to come. Their thoughts, ideas, and questions will shape our learning.
