This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 9th grade English students are unique individuals that come from diverse backgrounds. They bring with them their own personalities, histories, and interests that help make our classroom community an energetic place. Unfortunately, one of the biggest diversifying factors in my classroom is the reading levels and experiences of my students. For many of them English is not their first language and they are continuously working to improve their skills. For others, consistent and strong ELA instruction has not been provided to them in school and their abilities have suffered. As a result, the average reading level in my 9th grade classroom is that of a 4th grader with some students reading as low as 1st.

What makes these students so amazing is their positive attitudes, motivation to improve, and the ability to use their differences as ways to teach each other.

Every year we work together towards group and individual goals to develop ourselves as better readers, writers, students, and humans. On paper, my job as their teacher is to provide them with the literary skills they need to be successful in our world, but I find that through our journey together it grows into so much more.

My Project

For a lot of my students, reading is not their favorite activity and many struggle to buy in to the whole class reading material. With a push this year to build in more independent reading during class and utilize the reading choices of students to transfer and apply literary skills, a strong classroom library is needed! However, our existing classroom library will not sustain the diverse reading levels and interests of my students and many students do not have the ability to purchase their own books.

More books are needed to build up a library that will provide all students, regardless of ability, an access point to becoming lifelong readers.

It is my goal as their teacher to ensure that all of my students have a chance to dive into a book that grabs their attention and shows them reading in a new light. With this project, our library can continue to grow and become a window for all students to enter the world of reading!
