This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

One of the key challenges my students faced last year was staying organized. As a first-year, sixth-grade ELA teacher, I learned how much the absence of proper organization tools hindered their ability to keep track of their assignments and papers. To address this issue and empower my new students this year to excel academically, I would like to provide each of them with a three-ringed binder. By giving every student a binder, we will create an environment that fosters organization and ensures that essential documents are readily accessible. This simple step will contribute to their overall success by empowering them to develop a growth mindset by tracking their progress.

In addition to providing binders, I plan to encourage students to take ownership of their organization by equipping them with coloring supplies, thereby enabling them to creatively decorate divider pages for different sections, such as "Homework", "Turn in", "Reading", "Writing", "Grammar", and "Vocabulary".

Last year, my co-teacher and I provided students with affordable folders, but they did not serve the intended purpose effectively. Students mostly resorted to stuffing papers in the pockets, resulting in disarray. During essay units, students frequently had to restart their essays due to losing their rough drafts. In contrast, with this year's new binder system, students will not experience the frustration of having to rewrite because they will have a designated section for their writing in the binders. Ideally, as students track their growth, they will find a sense of pride in their writing, and many might even develop a genuine passion for writing.

Ultimately, in these trying times, parents in our community often struggle to afford school supplies. Thus, it is my hope that through DonorsChoose an equitable learning environment may begin to crystalize in my classroom once every student has access to a binder.
