Help us read even, though we don't know how to. We need to be able to listen to the reading material in our Language Arts Program because we haven't mastered the skills to read on our own, yet.
My students live in a low income area.
Most of them are Hispanic and come from working parents who can't or do not know how to help them improve their reading skills. Half of them have learning disibilities which hinder them from understanding and retaining the reading skills necessary to read simple text on their own.
My Project
My students are in a special program designed to reach the most struggling readers in our entire school. Much of the featured stories have been put on CDs so that the students would be able to listen to them (since they are not able to read them on their own) but the discs are getting scratched and the CD players are get worn out from daily usage. I need to find a way to preserve the materials before they become unusable. Downloading the books to MP3 players will enable me to do just that. If I'm able to do this, more students will be able to benefit from this program in the future.
If we are able to get the MP3 players, more students would be able to listen to the stories at the same time.
Right now only two can listen at a time. Having to wait to be able to listen to the stories slows down the students' progress. They have to find other things to do until the other two students finish listening to their stories.
Also, the tablet will allow me to download other stories and activities the students can use to enhance their understanding and retention of the featured stories.
