I teach in Walker, Louisiana. I teach Special Education to Kindergarten through Second grade students. I teach all core subjects as well as social living to those students that are unable to attend any regular education classes throughout the day.
This year I have two new kindergarten students joining my classroom that are Autistic. These students are coming from an Early Childhood Special Education class that is offered at another school in the parish. These students have previously had a sensory swing and ball pit in their classrooms to use when they become overwhelmed or frustrated. The pressure from these activities calms the students down and provides them with a sense of reassurance.
I currently do not have one of these devices and would love to be able to provide my students with the comfort and assurance that they are used to. This will provide the students and myself with a smooth transition into their new school and kindergarten classroom.
I also currently have two students with Williams Syndrome that can greatly benefit from the sensory devices.
Having these items will greatly benefit the individual students using them, as well as the rest of my students in the classroom. The sensory escape methods are crucial tools that Autistic students need to be successful in achieving their individual social goals and needs.
