Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a vibrant Special Education High School community with students special needs, and some with severe multiple disabilities. Students 12 to 21 years old and their families live in the Heart of Harlem New York or surrounding neighborhoods. Over half of the student population are English as New Learners (ENLs).
One of our greatest challenges is bringing clothing resources to our school population as many students wear the same items every day.
Our goal is to ensure every student has sufficient items to see them through the harsh icy cold winters and or warm weather with appropriate clothing. We would like to place the items in the school store with staff overseeing the process. Students with insufficient funding or housing options would be able to choose items based on fit and their own preferences as opposed to cost. When you have students living in the Heart of Harlem you realize they need to persevere through obstacles and discover their potential
My Project
We are a transitional school preparing students for an adult life in the community. Our hopes are they will be able to live productive, meaningful, and happy lives. Part of that is the persona presented to prospective employers. When the students can interview with fresh and new clothing they increase self esteem and confidence.
One of our students sat next to me at lunch duty and stated in a soft voice "I need a coat I am cold." This is one of the male students whom I provided with warm zip up fleece jackets from a prior donors chooses clothing project.
With the weather increasingly colder the necessity for having a warm winter coat and clothes is urgent. Many of the students wear the same clothing day after day because that is all they can access.
At times the clothing is not washed and is tattered because the family is in a shelter or they share housing with other families. We would like to offer our school community access to all items they need to both survive and prosper. New clothing becomes the armor to survive the students' realities of life.
