Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students have an extended school day and an extended school year. They are taught the Common Core standards through a vigorous and rounded curriculum. Every student takes math, science, English, history, physical education, and enrichment. Students participate in a variety of extracurricular opportunities and events throughout the year, including clubs. Moreover, the majority of our students attend our after-school program to get homework help and tutoring.

Due to the pandemic, our students will be working mostly from home.

Our students come to school in an open and caring environment. We celebrate learning and success in our school. They are so eager to come to school every day. I just want them to get what they came for--an excellent education (even from home)!

My Project

Due to the pandemic, this has been a trying year for all of us. Teaching and learning are now virtual, bringing many challenges for everyone involved. As a teacher, I have to use all my tools and resources to make learning interesting, engaging, and authentic for my students. As a reflective teacher, I know that when something doesn't work, it is time for a change. My school is doing the best it can to provide my fellow teachers and me with resources to provide our scholars with a high-quality education. However, I need to do everything I can to keep lessons engaging and fun for them.

Technology is an essential tool in the classroom (distance and in-person).

During distance learning, I use multiple platforms, programs, and apps to teach, plan and monitor my students' learning and progress. Doing this with one computer has proven difficult. It is difficult to monitor cameras on Zoom, take attendance, monitor that students are on task and on the right assignment, give them feedback when sharing my screen. An iPad allows me to do these things without having to switch back and forth between tabs. It also allows me to maximize learning time. For my students, every minute counts. They are low-income, minority students with limited resources; they need me to go above and beyond for them.

Once the pandemic ends, my students will have access to this iPad. They will be able to read online, play educational games, complete research, work on digital projects, as well as practice skills such as public speaking, and improving their English pronunciation. However, we need to protect it because we only have one. We need a protective case and a keyboard case for typing. This project will transform their education and their lives!
