Protecting Our Mother Earth

My students need iPads with cases, ink cartridges, glue sticks, card stock paper and a speaker for environmental science unit.

My Students

My students are a group of magnificent first graders who are in a Mandarin Dual Language program. Every day they spend half the day in an English speaking classroom with me and the other half day with their Mandarin teacher.

My first graders work very hard every day to learn all subjects in both English and Mandarin in order to be proficient in both languages, according to Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.

My school is a Title I school, but students, families, teachers, and staff all work together to facilitate a better future for our students.

My Project

According to the Next Generation Science Standards first grade students need to "obtain information to identify where water is found on Earth and that it can be solid or liquid." My students will learn where Earth stores water, three states of matter, and the importance of keeping our water clean.

First of all, students will read books like, Magic School Bus: Inside the Earth to gather information.

They will also use iPads to read books online by using RAZ Kids in small groups. Next, we will observe water in solid, liquid, and gas to grasp states of matter. Moreover, students will research water images by using the iPads to determine what kind of water is drinkable and how to protect our water source. By the end of the unit, students will learn to use Pages to write, type and draw pictures on the iPad for the final report. If time permits, they will also learn to add music on their final report in order to obtain 21st century skills.

The ink cartridges, paper and glue sticks I have requested will be used to print their reports and making hands-on projects in our classroom. The speaker will be connected to the iPads for presentation assistance.
