Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Angelica, Ali, and Yahan are students in the English Learner Program. They are all new to our school this year and are very excited that they have the opportunity to work on this project.

These three students are leaders in our English Learner Program. They motivate other students and often come in for extra English tutoring. They quickly seek support from other school staff to complete their assignments and have developed strong relationships with our school librarian (so important for English Learners!). Angelica, Ali, and Yahan are model students and they teach the other students how to consistently strive for success.

Our school was able to acquire Kindle e-readers to promote literacy among our English Learner community. We want our students to become proficient readers and we want to support the curriculum in all of their other classes. Because the readers are linked to their own public library accounts, they are able to access many resources, for all their classes, directly. We are also working closely with our school librarian in literature/reading circles and she helps each student choose their next book.

Literacy is an academic skill but its also a real-life skill. Many of our students are not acquainted with the culture and customs and teaching the students to use the resources at the public library connect them with city life.

In Their Own Words

Our teachers gave us Kindles and we linked them to our public library accounts so that we can check out books and read whenever we want. The problem is that our Kindles are getting damaged in our backpacks and we want to protect them so they don't get damaged and last a long time.

By example, we are showing the high school community that reading is fun and should be a consistent habit. Sometimes the students that are not in our program see that we are using e-readers and they ask us about them. Some of those students bought a Kindle for themselves and more students are using e-readers at our school than just the students in our program.

Having the Kindle e-reader cases will help us protect the devices so we can keep them for a long time and maybe pass them on to other students too. Sometimes, our sisters and brothers and other family members like to use them too. Since we have had the readers, we all read more and we have a lot of help with learning English.
