My Project
My students attend a very small, rural Pennsylvania school. Many of my students come from low-socioeconomic families and a large percentage of our school qualifies for free or reduced-price lunches. However, our teachers embrace this rural advantage and make the effort to break the mold of the traditional classroom setting by connecting our students to their community and utilizing the plethora of resources that our country setting provides us.
Our teachers are continually trying to give our students opportunities for experimenting, creating, and thinking critically using the Next Generation Science Standards.
A key component to NGSS is creating phenomena and connecting students to the world around them. I've been working on this by transitioning a neglected garden bed at our school into a pollinator garden. Not only will this help the environment and our local pollinators, but it will also give students the opportunity to view elements of their ecosystem in a safe and controlled setting. Having the opportunity to observe will allow them to start making connections and questioning the world around them.
Our PTO has graciously supported the start of the project, but I would like to enhance the area with a bug hotel, bird feeder, and bird bath for additional wildlife viewing.
