My students need a class set of the "This I Believe" books to use as examples as they write their own personal "This I Believe statement."

My Students
Stereotypes and prejudice are often grounded in ignorance. Simply reading about other cultures and worldviews can help individuals better understand why people of different beliefs do what they do. The "This I Believe" project is intended to promote tolerance through reading and writing.
Most all of my students are below grade level in their reading and writing skills.
They don't see much value in either reading or writing, and often times school curriculum lacks relevance to their lives. The purpose of this project is to make reading and writing extraordinarily relevant to the students lives and also give them an authentic audience by publishing their very own work in order to increase their investment in the project.
My Project
By obtaining a class set of each of the "This I Believe" books, my students will have a clear example of many different types of real-life personal essays that others have written about their worldview and/or life situation. In addition, my students will have an example of what their final product might look like. My hope is to publish and bind their personal belief statements, because of the inspiration of the "This I Believe" books, so that the students may have a copy of their final products.
Your donation to this project will not only inspire students and help them better understand their own belief system, but at a fundamental level, it will also improve their literacy skills.
In addition, the resources for this project can and WILL be used through the years across the curriculum by multiple teachers and hundreds of students. Thank you for your consideration.
