My students need pig specimens, microscope slides, reflex hammers, laminator supplies, file folders, and paper for projects, and computer HDMI and USB cables.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Biondo's classroom raised $786
This project is fully funded
My Students
Our 7th grade classes love to be engaged in the mystery and excitement of hands-on activities. Each day, we learn, discuss, and discover parts of their world that they didn't look at as closely as they do in a science classroom. I encourage students to debate and question the world around them.
This year I have the pleasure of having 159 wonderful young 7th grade scientists.
They love to get their hands messy in science experiments. With every unit of study, their understanding of the world around them sparks engaging discussions and debates of science. Unfortunately budgets are tight and lab activities and experiments that require ordered materials each year rarely get funded.
Every year I am surprised by how unaware students can be about their own body. Learning the human body units are always a highlight of the year for students, they love to delve deeper into the inner workings of their bodies. Ending with a fetal pig dissection is fantastic because it brings all the pictures and video clips into real perspective. We also go into discussion on the ethics of dissections and proper respect and handling of the specimen that we are fortunate enough to be able to study.
My Project
The Scientific Method and Science Inquiry has become a main focus of our curriculum. The card stock paper and laminator will allow me to create manipulatives that can be used year after year to foster critical thinking at all levels, along with the file folders to keep them organized and maximize their use by keeping them in good condition. Microscope slides will allow students delve deeper into their understanding of the human body systems. The reflex hammers will create a more real experience in my reflex lab that students do during the nervous system unit. Last is technology, the wire for my speakers to the SmartBoard was damaged and no longer works. The 2 cables requested will allow the video image and sound to work properly for students to gain aditional visual support.
Donations towards this project will help generate curiosity, discussion, debate, and an overall understanding of the function and relationships in the environment around my students.
They are in need of real life examples that give substance and meaning to the content they are learning about. Science should not be taught with pictures on a screen, but with manipulatives that can foster whole sensory learning.
