My Students
I teach mostly West Indian students who come from immigrant families in Brooklyn, New York. The neighborhood I teach, Canarsie, is also the same neighborhood I grew up in. While our cultures may be different, I too grew up in a working-class family and found my school to be part of a larger family for me.
I love teaching at this school.
Most of my students have been here since pre-k which means that now that they are in our middle school, we have been together for almost nine years! It warms my heart to think that I am part of a larger family for them.
I love bringing materials into my classroom that enrich student education, foster creativity, and support differentiation.
My Project
It has been a tough couple of months for so many of the kids across the country and especially our children here in New York City. They have been out of school for so long and have finally been back. Many kids did not come as they still fear getting sick. However, I am so lucky to have small groups in person every day. I have made their safety of the utmost importance to me. I fear though, they sometimes feel as though it is a sterile environment. I want them to have less anxiety about school and to feel comfortable while here. Because there are so few students in each class, this would be enough chairs for them to have their own and space out. Besides health, my next fear is a lack of education. They missed so much school; I want them to read independently as much as possible. Motivation in the form of comfort!
