My Students

I see myself as a “D” teacher. "Why is that?" you might wonder. Well, I'm Dedicated, Driven, and Determined to do what it takes to make a difference in my students' lives and help them succeed! Right now I am focusing on improving my students' understanding of money.

My students understand that money doesn't grow on trees, but they definitely don't understand how to spend and save it properly.

Although 80% of my students come from economically disadvantaged households they don’t let that obstacle stop them. Everyday they come to school eager and ready to learn. This is a very important project because financial responsibility tends to be a cyclical cycle, so if these students aren't educated about money, it is more than likely they will grow up to have little money like their parents. The idea of money can be a very difficult topic for students to conceptualize, so as their teacher, I want to make it as fun and clear as I can. In order to make money math easier to understand, I need to have access to a research based curriculum. This will allow me teach money concepts in a clear manner and help me meet my students' unique needs.

My Project

I would like to get the Bridges in Mathematics curriculum to use as a teaching tool for financial literacy. This curriculum comes with all the necessary materials to get started, including teacher guides, student money manipulatives, and student workbooks. Lessons from Bridges will provide many concrete examples, visuals, and opportunities for students to explore how to save, spend and gain money through fun and engaging activities. These math lessons will also help keep students engaged in learning as they have opportunities to try out new concepts and demonstrate their degree of understanding in real life situations. I know that the addition of these resources will increase students’ level of engagement, participation, and success in math and help prepare them to be financially responsible people.

I’m sure you’ve heard this already- the schools' budgets are all dried up.

These resources that will teach students financial responsibility will not be available without your support! Your support will help my students to better understand money and help prepare them for the future. Thank you for your consideration and desire to help students all across the country- they are America's future!
