Promoting Math Thinking Skills in Math Club

Help me give my students puzzle activity books and prizes to promote problem solving skills in our math club!

My Project

All students should be exposed to math that extends their thinking beyond the classroom and state expectations. Some feel that only "smart kids" can do higher math. We want our students to be "good problem solvers" not just "good math students."

Our grade level will be holding a math club for 4th and 5th grade students to just get together and solve math problems together for fun and some treats and prizes!

We are also holding a math competition for kids who want a competitive experience to grow their math thinking.

We want to expose females, students of color, and those who qualify for IEPs to deeper math thinking in a fun way.

The club will work the problems out together in a variety of ways. We will create awards and have prizes for those who go through the problem solving process correctly.

The competition group will be able to submit their problems through the program.

There are 5 competitions from November through March. We will meet during lunch time to complete the problems.

We hope that the outcome of this "club" and "competition" can extend math thinking to those who want more and those who just want to be part of a club. We want everyone to see themselves as math learners and that they can be problem solvers in many ways.

The club group can work together to solve the problems collaboratively. The competitive group will need to do the problems on their own to qualify for the national competition.
