Promoting Justice and Representation through Reading, Writing, and Publishing
Help me give my students culturally representative books and hands-on materials that showcase diverse racial, cultural, and ability-based perspectives, that will encourage them to be the authors of their own life stories.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My first-grade classroom, located on Chicago’s South Side, reflects the city’s rich cultural and racial diversity. Our learning environment thrives on hands-on activities, small group instruction, and empowering students to become writers and publishers of their own life stories.
This year, my students are eager to explore family dynamics within our classroom, community, and the world, seeking to understand how families live, work, and celebrate their identities, traditions, and cultures.
My project aims to foster justice and representation by incorporating reading, writing, publishing, and play. I will provide culturally representative books and hands-on materials that celebrate diverse racial, cultural, and ability-based perspectives.
Students will explore stories that highlight various family structures, traditions, and challenges. These books will act as windows into others’ lives and mirrors reflecting their own experiences. By discussing similarities and differences in the texts, students will deepen their understanding of inclusion, equity, and justice.
Through this project, students will strengthen their reading, writing, and publishing skills. They will write and illustrate their own stories inspired by their lives and the cultures they’ve learned about, ultimately publishing them to share with peers and families.
Hands-on materials, like the Lakeshore Block Play People sets, will allow students to creatively act out family dynamics and cultural traditions, reinforcing their learning through play.
This project will instill a love for reading, empower students to see their voices as valuable, and help them appreciate the beauty of the diverse world around them. By celebrating their identities and others’ experiences, they will gain confidence and empathy as they grow into thoughtful, informed individuals.
