This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work in an expanding "strand" (group of sub-separate classrooms for high-needs students with disabilities) with students ranging from 3-12, all of whom are tackling daily living skills appropriate to their age, needs, and skills each and every day. Creating opportunities to build and teach independence is at the core of what my colleagues and I strive to impart upon our students.
From 3-year-old students working on developing fine motor skills in order to learn to feed themselves to preteens learning to advocate for privacy and prepare simple meals, there is always something that our students can tackle in order to prepare themselves for adulthood and increase their independence.
For this project, I am asking for your help to provide the opportunities and tools to help current and future students become more self-reliant, confident, and independent across their academic and adult lives.
In order to do this, I am asking for items to aid in independent feeding for young students who have not yet mastered the intricacies of handling spoons, juice pouches, and other daily items that make up their snacks and meals -- learning to hold, angle, and maneuver a spoon while balancing the contents is one skill in and of itself; ensuring that the food successfully makes it to one's mouth is another skill entirely!
Access to fridges and microwaves in each room will allow students to store and access preferred items and learn how to use the microwave to create simple meals.
Adding sliding bolt door locks to bathroom doors will simultaneously aid in teaching students to practice privacy during personal hygiene and to strengthen their fine motor control to tackle skills like shoe tying.
Thank you for reading and considering our students! đź’–
