Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in a dual language program where they learn in Spanish and English. Many of them are immigrants or come from immigrant families making it more meaningful to maintain their native language. They love coming to school and are eager to learn and work together. My students are very curious and enjoy asking questions and exploring new materials and ideas.
For many of my students, this is their first time in school, and they are excited about the new things they learn every day.
My Project
Our young students are learning to read and write in Spanish through our accelerated reading curriculum, Estrellita. In order to maximize their experience with the curriculum, we are requesting the Estrellita kit for a preschool classroom. This program teaches individual sounds through a combination of whole language, phonics-based strategies that are developmentally appropriate and fun for young children. It includes a variety of activities such as stories, rhymes, riddles, cheers, and games designed to develop and foster phonemic awareness.
The PreKindergarten Early Literacy Program teaches students the sounds of the letters by immersing them in a variety of phonemic awareness activities and to provide practice with basic blending in order to prepare them for reading in kindergarten.
This program addresses a variety of learning styles by incorporating a multisensory approach (audio, verbal, tactile and kinesthetic) into the instructional content. It also promotes parental involvement throughout the program. There are individual and group assessment charts for both the Sonidos (sounds) and Blending components and it will be used during our literacy block for the entire school year. We hope you can support our project, and share it with others who value bilingual education.
