My students greet me every day on zoom with positive attitudes and are excited to learn. They are creative artists, thinkers, explorers, and they are getting ready to become scientists, mathmaticians, authors, illustrators and civil rights activists. They come from diverse backgrounds and speak various home languages.
My Project
It is important that every student, family and teacher to have access to great picture books. Picture books that not only explore the alphabet or numbers or our students’ favorite characters. Books where they can relate to the characters; books that mirror my students and their backgrounds. My students need books that help them develop their own character and identity.
These books will help build community through inclusion and the strength that comes from a diverse group of learners.
Some of the books teach this explicitly while some are more implicit with the lesson. In either case, my students will have access to books where they can see themselves.
