This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that services students from TK to 5th grade. This year I'll have 3rd and 4th grade students who are part of a bilingual program learning to read, write and speak in English and Spanish. Most of our students have been part of the bilingual program since Kindergarten.

Our school is located in the heart of Los Angeles a few miles form downtown LA where bilingual skills are a great asset.

We are a Title One school that services low income families from different cultural backgrounds.

My Project

Reading is fundamental and it is an educational tool that will open new doors, create new adventures and teach new things. In a global world like today, learning in more than one language is an asset and can open so many more opportunities for our students and generations to come. As mentioned previously my students are part of a bilingual program in which they are learning to read, write and speak in both English and Spanish. The ultimate goal of our bilingual program is bilteracy. Spanish books are not easy to find and our Spanish library isn't as extensive as our English library.

These Spanish books will allow our students to explore the world.

For some in their native tongue and for others in their second language. At our school we implement Reading Workshop, a literacy program first implemented by Lucy Calkins from Teachers College at Columbia University in NY. For Reading Workshop to be successful we need an ample amount of classroom library books. For a bilingual classroom like ours we need an abundance of books in both languages. If funded these books will be used daily. My students have books bags in which they choose books weekly to read everyday during the week. Students read everyday in both languages and therefore need a variety of books to choose from in many genres.

With these sets of books my students will have different choices of reading material to continue their literacy growth in fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing among other important factors.
