This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been a teacher at Fremont High School for 5 years. This is my first year as testing coordinator, in which I organize and implement all of the state and federally mandated testing. Our school has always been among the lowest test scores in the state. We are an urban school with a severly underserved student population. With so many students on campus, it's hard to both set up the test administration and get teachers and students mentally prepared. My proposal has several parts, all of which I hope will end with the students and teachers at my school site improving testing conditions and scores. This is especially important now that students have to pass the CAHSEE exam if they wish to recieve their high school diploma. The first part of my plan involves the logistics of test administration. Right now, we are spread all over campus during testing administration. When students are given the wrong test, or do not have testing materials, it can take up to 45 minutes to find someone to help fix the problem. This is valuable testing time that the students are missing out on. In addition, because they often have to go try to find a testing administrator, they often miss out on important testing directions. To fix this problem, I am going to have helpers stationed at strategic points around campus, so that the students can stay in the classroom and receive testing directions. This proposal funding would pay for a set of walkie talkies so that we could cut the length of time to get students their missing test materials from over half an hour to about five minutes. Hopefully, this system will allow teachers and students to focus on what is truly important, which is doing well on these high stakes tests.
