This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located near the downtown area of Los Angeles. It is a Title 1 school and every year our budget gets smaller and smaller. This year we had to cut field trips, among other things from our budget. Despite the lack of resources, we have an excellent dual language program. This is due to the dedication of the teachers who, not only invest a lot of their time, but also their own money.

Our students are enthusiastic, dedicated learners.

Despite their struggles at home, they come eager to learn. Our students come from economically disadvantaged homes. Many families struggle financially to make ends meet. Our students bear that burden.

My Project

Our students have spent the last school year at home and the only thing connecting them to school has been their devices. They are now in the classroom and ready to learn. Our classroom library is the hub of our classroom. It is where students go to read from a diverse selection of books and as they develop their literacy levels both in English and Spanish, we need to expand our selection of books in the library. Our biggest needs are books in Spanish. The selection of books in this order is diverse both in content and language.

The library is the place where students enjoy reading quietly, or gather to discuss and recommend a good book.

Right now all that is there is a rug where they can sit on. Many of the students will sit on the floor so they can lean against a wall. It would be wonderful for them to have a place to sit or a pillow to lean on. The bean bag chairs and pillows I selected would enhance the library and make it more inviting for my students. It would help promote the culture of reading we strive for.
