Promote Social Justice and Racial Diversity in the Classroom!

Help me give my students access to Henrietta Lacks and Just Mercy. This literature will promote racial diversity and expose students to life experience outside of their own.

My Students

I am teaching at a 9th-12th grade charter high school. My students are bright, funny, athletic, and artistic. Many students receive special services through their IEP and 504 plans. Each student brings a light and unique perspective into my classroom. While most races and ethnicities are represented at my school, our actual racial diversity in student population is minimal.

My 12th grade students need to have more exposure to life experience that does not reflect their own.

Reading diverse literature is crucial in helping students understand the importance of racial diversity, equality and social justice.

My Project

These books will be taught and analyzed in a 12th grade English Language Arts classroom. Both stories focus on the lives of African American individuals who have been unjustly treated in our country.

As we read these books together as a class, students will have the opportunity to analyze important issues such as racial identity, diversity, and social justice.

Students will engage in a variety of lesson activities, including exploring how the issues related in these stories apply in their own lives. Students will reflect on how they can promote a more just and diverse future.
