My students have music only once a week for 45 minutes. So, it is crucial that I make those precious minutes of music learning as meaningful and powerful as they possibly can be. I am eager to help my students to grow in their musicality. The sky’s the limit!
Music can and should be an avenue for my students to express themselves, focus on being creative and let go of some of their worries for a while.
Many of my students speak Spanish as their first language, although some come from as far away as Nepal. A significant percentage of the student population is learning to speak English, while still being held to high standards of learning and achievement in primarily English-based curricula. Music should also bolster their self esteem and help them to feel more positive about coming to school; in order for that to happen, I need to help my students make personal connections to music class, to make music learning worth a lot to them. I hope that if they know people are investing in their music success, they will value music class.
My Project
A few years ago, donors helped me secure two EPSON PowerLiteX17 projectors for my classrooms, and they have been in use every day since then. Now, the bulbs are starting to die: one has a tint of pinkish-purple, the other one "fritzes" and turns dark blue. Needless to say, it's been very difficult to see what is being projected.
We need new bulbs for our projectors so that we can see what we're learning!
I use the projectors to show the Class Dojo points. I use the projectors to display Spotlight on Music learning slides and videos. I use the projector with my document camera when we are learning to write music notation. The projectors are very important to teaching and learning in my music classroom, so they need to be fully functional.
