Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Ever since their first day of school, my students are taught to come to school ready, responsible, and respectful. In my classroom, we teach all of these things but they are also tasked with being resilient. We discuss how they can be resilient in the classroom and in their everyday life. They define resilient as someone who never gives up, someone who takes every situation as a challenge and grows from it. My group of students are English Language Learners in the inner city of Baltimore.

They are faced with the challenge of trying to learn the curriculum while also overcoming the language barriers.

Despite this challenge, my students are resilient. They come to school eager and ready to learn. They are thoughtful and caring individuals and when you put them together they thrive, regardless of these challenges. These students are truly capable of anything if given this support they deserve.

My Project

Having a document camera in the classroom will benefit students now and students to come. Document cameras can help students think critically. It allows the students to visualize a piece of work and annotate it to learn vocabulary and the central message. In our second grade class, we are constantly annotating objectives, texts, or passages to help us truly understand. With this device, students will be able to follow along as I read and see each word with the sounds. This is especially important for my schools population of English Language Learners.

How are they supposed to learn the language when they can barely access it?

A document camera provides access to more than just texts and passages. It can allow to students to understand how to use manipulatives to solve a math problem, demonstrate how to sound words out, and illustrate how to complete an assignment. By implementing the use of a document camera, I can enhance ALL of my students learning.
