What does technology look like in today’s society? If you asked my students in my ACT Prep or Algebra 2 classrooms they’d tell you technology is an overhead projector from the ‘70s and some Vis-à-vis markers, in assorted colors of course. I teach mostly juniors in a high-need visual and performing arts magnet school. My students come into my classroom with a wide array of talents and really thrive when the lessons are infused with visuals. I cannot express to you how difficult it is to do that with only an overhead projector.
My education has been infused with technology. I went to a high school where every classroom had a projector then continued my education studying engineering. My life has been built showing me the benefits of technology and now I want to bring these privileges to my students. With a projector, not only will I be able to tell my students about the real-life applications of our content, I will actually be able to show them. Being able to make that real-world connection can be all the difference for my students who tend to be missing this critical piece. Without this connection, math can seem like a bunch of letters and numbers combined in an arbitrary way that holds no significance.
Of critical importance to me is to make my students college ready. I try to create a “collegesque” classroom where the students really push themselves in an effort to prepare themselves for the challenges college will bring. Just the other day in my class we worked through solving a system of equations with three-variables to show the kids what is expected of them on the college level and I had a student ask me, “Can I take a picture of that on my camera phone?” simply because it was the longest problem the student had ever seen worked out. These kids respond to visuals and this is where your hands can actively affect my classroom.
With your support, you can provide my students with that bridge they are missing. An LCD projector will allow my students to readily see the real-life applications of the material they’re studying. I will be able to inspire my students in my ACT Prep class with visuals and videos from their favorite colleges to help them realize their dreams are possible. Having nearly no available resources in my district, this is where I reach out to you, the donors, to help me but more importantly to help my students. Show them technology is more than an overhead and help me put their dreams into focus.
