My Students
Imagine a third grade classroom full of students who have grown up in the age of cell phones, Facebook, and the Internet. Now, imagine that classroom is equipped with only two desktop computers and an overhead projector. How do you engage these students in a lesson?
I have a very energetic, very eager group of eight and nine-year-olds who are excited about learning new things.
My students aspire to be doctors, professional skateboarders, pop stars, or the President of the United States. They come from many different backgrounds and bring a wide range of experiences to share. Our classroom mission statement exhorts that "We are exceptional. We are not ordinary. We will work hard to achieve our goals. We will support and respect each other. We are exceptional. We are not ordinary." And such will we be.
My school serves a population in which over 80% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Many do not have computers or Internet access at home. School is the place where they can get in touch with the increasingly technological and global society in which we live. Having an LCD projector in our classroom would aid them in their exploration of the world around them.
My Project
My students love to use computers, watch videos, and be able to interact with their own learning. Unfortunately, my school is one of the few elementary schools in the district that has not been recently renovated or rebuilt. As such, while many of their peers on the other side of the city (or even just a few neighborhoods away) have technology like Smart Boards, our classroom lacks in ways to integrate technology into learning.
With the introduction of an LCD projector, my students could watch videos that show them exactly what happens when you borrow from one place to subtract from another, see maps of the world that show them just how far away they live from Korea (where the main character of one of our stories lives), and present to the class using videos and PowerPoint presentations that they themselves created. Student engagement in lessons will increase, and in turn, so will their learning.
When my students can see, hear, and interact with the concepts we learn, they carry with them an understanding that they do not reach through simple paper-and-pencil or question and response instruction.
They are children of the 21st century, and their learning depends on their ability to make relevant the things that they are exposed to in school. With an LCD projector, this impressive task of paramount importance becomes feasible.
