I am a Virginia Preschool Initiative Teacher in Roanoke, Virginia. We are also called the "Star City." Roanoke is one of Virginia's larger cities. With the larger city, comes large challenges. The children in my classroom are considered "High Risk" because of various hardships. Our students are diverse in socio-economics, national origin, color, religion, physical abilities, and family dynamics. Part of our school population experience homelessness, suffering displacement from basic shelter through no fault of their own.
In most every situation this is my classes first experience in embracing differences and understanding respect for others outside of their immediate world.
My mission is not only to provide them with the skills that will lead them to success in Kindergarten, but to nurture and provide an atmosphere that promotes security and a place to belong.
My Project
The materials requested in project “Star Light” will foster an opportunity for community enrichment.
Our school is known as “The WES All Stars.” The school theme is to ‘Choose Kind’.
Through our project, we will make our theme more than words. We will create a tactile experience that transforms word into actions.
We will paint our canvas bags that will hold: three children’s books, a stuffed animal, and a snuggly blanket. Each of these items will bring comfort to children who are experiencing homelessness.
Please consider helping our preschoolers bring a bright light into the lives of children experiencing homelessness!
