Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are true theater geeks - they love the mechanics of design, the process of bringing a play to life through the set, costume, sound and light choices. An after-school club morphed into a class attracting kids who love drama but are more interested in being backstage than onstage.
My students are literally starting from scratch - anything we can scratch together, we use!
We are a performing arts school with over 1000 middle school students studying music, dance, video arts, visual arts, and drama. The Stagecraft crew will support 14 productions this year on a shoestring budget. They are tackling fundraising and material requests in teams and are thrilled to be part of something new and exciting on our campus. Stagecraft is a class where everyone can participate - we are even incorporating sign language into our curriculum as our backstage communication to include our population of deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
My Project
We have no computers and no reference library. These books will empower the students and give them in class resources to assist in their design and thought processing. They can bring ideas to the table and have materials to back them up. We can learn by doing, but the reference books will really pump up our thinking!
The students are so excited about fundraising and building our program.
Seeing donations coming in from people who support what they are doing will inspire them to continue their own efforts within the community. I will be sharing our progress on this project with them on a weekly basis - I hope that together we can give Stagecraft a win!
