Our middle school serves nearly 800 students in grades 6th through 8th. At least a third of these students qualify for free lunch, and many in this group are currently homeless. School provides nutritious breakfasts and lunches Monday through Friday during the school year. But what do these children eat Saturdays and Sundays?
Children experiencing homelessness don't always have someone to take them to a shelter or food bank.
Many teens and pre-teens who are experiencing homelessness often wouldn't feel comfortable asking strangers for help, even if they knew who to ask. Project Sandwich was started by a local teen who saw many of her peers tired and stressed from lack of food. She decided to do something about it, so she and her family started filling lunch bags for those students to have for the weekend. Her idea was a big success at her school, so she wants it to be a part of every school in our community. I, along with my Speech and Debate students, hope to make Project Sandwich a part of our school this year, and we can only do it with your support.
My Project
My students and I send home Friday Food Bags, so homeless and hungry students will have a reliable food source over the weekend.
Your support ensures our shelves are always stocked, and this allows us to feed those who may not otherwise have a reliable food source when not a school.
We always need shelf-stable items, such as oatmeal, canned meats, grits, breakfast bars, popcorn, and other prepackaged items. Having these on hand allows us to fill bags each Friday, providing those who need it two entrees, two breakfast items, and fruits and vegetables for the weekend. Your support will help ease the burden for over one third of our student body.
