Our middle school serves nearly 800 students in grades 6th through 8th. At least a third of these students qualify for free lunch, and many in this group are currently homeless. School provides nutritious breakfasts and lunches Monday through Friday during the school year. But what do these children eat Saturdays and Sundays?
Children experiencing homelessness don't always have someone to take them to a shelter or food bank.
Many teens and pre-teens who are experiencing homelessness often wouldn't feel comfortable asking strangers for help, even if they knew who to ask. Project Sandwich was started by a local teen who saw many of her peers tired and stressed from lack of food. She decided to do something about it, so she and her family started filling lunch bags for those students to have for the weekend. Her idea was a big success at her school, so she wants it to be a part of every school in our community. I, along with my Speech and Debate students, hope to make Project Sandwich a part of our school this year, and we can only do it with your support.
My Project
Many homeless and hungry students get breakfast and lunch and school during the week, but don't have a reliable food source on the weekend. With support of generous donors, our program has provided 262 meals over the past three weeks. That need is ongoing, and we can only meet it with support from generous donors.
With your support, we can continue providing a free, reliable food source to hungry middle School students.
The tuna, chicken, sausages, Spam, and chips will provide lunches, while the juice, fruit bars, and breakfast cookies will breakfast. Your support does more fill an empty pantry; it feeds an empty stomach, touches a heart, and provides hope.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
