I provide library services at a Title I urban school in Ohio where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Our students face many challenges at home that make it difficult to focus on learning. I want to do everything in my power to provide a creative, engaging learning time during their weekly 45 minute visit.
The school is not able to supply the library with any funds for new books or projects.
Grants, corporate gift requests, and Donor's Choose projects are the only options to acquire materials that will ensure my students get exposed to the same experiences as their peers in more affluent communities. Please help fund their futures!
My Project
It's never too early to start building skills like creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. MakerSpace is a movement that helps build these skills in older students. Our PlaykerSpace is modeled along the same ideas but with a lot more play because that's how younger students learn best.
Our students need opportunities to solve problems, work together, and deepen their imagination.
The tools on this list will help provide them with these experiences and prepare them for a brighter future.
The Magna Tiles and Marble Run are two activities suitable for working together in a group. Student can construct anything they can imagine. The materials allow for instant feedback as to whether their design is working. They can rework the designs as necessary to get the results they want.
The stand up magnetic dry erase board with magnetic letters will provide opportunities to engage creatively in groups. We can play games like Hangman as well as practice our communication skills making signs and announcements.
The light box will help expand upon a few of our current science exploration stations that stimulate natural curiosity about the world around them. I chose additional manipulatives based on common interests they have expressed: geology, the human body, and insects.
These materials were chosen with care and after reviewing recommendations from other schools libraries that already have established PlaykerSpaces. With your help I can ensure that the social and emotional growth that comes from play will not be left behind as additional STEAM activities are integrated into our program.
