Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
A coffee cart project has been an incredibly meaningful and hands-on learning experience for my students, who all have multiple disabilities. Many of my learners struggle with traditional classroom instruction, so this project gives them a chance to engage in something real and purposeful. At our low-income school, which serves a diverse population, opportunities like this are especially valuable. The coffee cart allows my students to work on practical skills like counting money, telling time, and following directions—all through real tasks they can see, touch, and feel proud of completing.
The project also supports the development of essential life and social skills.
My students rotate through roles such as greeter, cashier, and server, which gives them a chance to practice communication, teamwork, and responsibility. Even for non-verbal learners, there are meaningful ways to contribute—whether it’s handing a cup to a teacher or using visuals to participate. The structured routine of the coffee cart is comforting for many of my students and gives them a clear sense of purpose each day we run it.
Most importantly, this experience builds confidence and pride. My students aren’t just learning—they’re contributing to our school community in a way that’s visible and valued. Seeing staff enjoy something they helped create is empowering for them. For learners who often face significant challenges, having this kind of success makes a lasting impact. The coffee cart is more than just a project—it’s a path to independence, self-worth, and real-world readiness.
