I teach specialized instruction math. My goal is for my students to enter the mainstream math classes. In order to move my students into the grade level math classes, I need materials that are leveled but also grade level and age appropriate.
My students receive special education services in math.
They are sensitive to the fact that they are not "in with everyone else" and have often asked how they can get into the mainstream class. They are eighth graders in a public middle school. Next year my students are going into high school. I want them to get as close to grade level as they can, so they can enter mainstream math in high school.
My Project
I am requesting calculators so that our classes have all of the students using the same model. It's difficult to teach a new concept when each calculator in the class works a little differently. I am also requesting age appropriate grade level concept materials that are leveled to meet each student's needs and challenges.
My project is important because my students are in eighth grade and want to go into "regular" math in high school.
If they don't have the skills or they are placed inappropriately, their transcripts will reflect that. I want to build confidence in math where there was no confidence before.
