My Project
Increasing literacy and interest in reading are passions. One way we've managed to successfully do this is through Project LIT, an after-school book club for all readers. We work to ensure that we highlight stories about and authorship from communities often left without voices. Additionally, we select topics that are difficult to navigate if you haven't planned how to address them.
The students who join this club are world changers!
They are prepared to tackle the problems of tomorrow today! This project is to obtain copies of Slay by Brittney Morris, in which a teen creates a video game as a safe place for BIPOC peoples and finds the game subject to scrutiny when it's labeled reverse racism. This title will appeal to chapter members because of the connections to video gaming, safe spaces, and their own deep sense of justice. All readers are allowed to keep the novels once our discussion is finished and encouraged to share them with others, which is how we increase the reach of our club. Any extra copies are placed in our book vending machine or our little free libraries to share with our broader community.
