This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In the past few years Kindergarten has grown into a place where a strong foundation for learning is needed. My community is very low income and many of my students do not have access to technology. Introducing Project Lead the Way in K will set them up for a life full of possibility.
I have 25 Kindergarten students, from all different backgrounds and socioeconomic levels.
My school is very old, being built in the 1950s and getting the technology we need has not been an easy goal to reach. Luckily, my amazing school district has updated our school with WiFi and introduced programs that will bring STEM learning to life, such as Project Lead the Way. We are limited to 5 iPads per classroom. While I am very grateful for all that they have given me, I would like to be able to have more than 5 students working on iPads at a time. Project Lead the Way will introduce my students into the world of science and engineering using the tools that they will be expected to know as they grow. I would love to give my students the ability to start STEM now so that their lives will be successful.
My Project
In my classroom, I use many apps. We use a language arts program called iRead, in which students master reading skills. We use IXL in math, and are about to launch Project Lead the Way in all of our Kindergarten classes. Project Lead the Way is a STEM based program that, in Kindergarten, works on structure and function. Students will learn how things move, how their bodies work, how to digitally code, and how to persevere. While many of PLTW's activities are based in hands-on activities, there is the ability to teach them to record their information, organize their thinking, and keep a record of their work using iPads. I want my students to get comfortable using these materials alongside STEM projects. Having these 4 extra iPads in my classroom will make all the difference.
By gaining 4 extra iPads I will be able to have 12 students (almost half my class) online at one time.
I will have 3 computers, 5 regular iPads, and the 4 mini iPads I am hoping to get donations for so that I can reach all of my students on PLTW software in one day, after each lesson. As it is, rotating students through 3 computers and 5 iPads are just not quite enough to make it work with our schedule. Having 4 more iPads will change the pacing of our lessons.
