My students need a class set of "Monster" by Michael Dean Myers to teach them about tolerance and acceptance. In today's political climate, messages about diversity and respect are of the upmost importance.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds. The county is comprised of very affluent families but also very economically disadvantaged families. The students in my classroom are primarily Caucasian and African-American. Our school is in a rural part of Georgia, bordering a mid-size city.
My classroom is a co-teach model, so I teach some students with learning disabilities.
My co-teacher is a reading specialist. Our goals include raising the lexile scores and achievement level of all our students. We focus on student-centered learning and project-based learning. I try to provide authentic experiences for my students so that the skills they practice in my classroom align with the skills that they will need outside of the classroom.
My students are eager to learn. They get excited about the projects we complete in class. With the assistance of donorschoose.org, we can accomplish even more within the four walls that mean so much to me. These students are my "children," and any support we receive is greatly appreciated!
My Project
I plan to teach Monster alongside To Kill A Mockingbird to teach my students about racism, prejudice, and injustice. I hope to teach my students about understanding, tolerance, and acceptance. In today's political climate, I believe this is a very important message.
I hope to inspire students to stand up for what is right, even when they are not a part of the group that is being discriminated against.
In order to fight these prejudices, members of the majority have to understand their privilege and use it to fight the injustices that occur on a daily basis. My goal is for my students to understand the depth of the racial issues that still plague this country in order to fight them.
