Project-ing Our Voices: Technology Integration for Speech Therapy Engagement

My students need a projector and magnetic dry erase board to support their multi-sensory needs during therapeutic activities to enhance their communication skills.

My Students

As a Speech Language Pathologist, I have the privilege of working with approximately 45 diverse learners each year. These students range from Pre-K through 5th grade and have a variety of special needs. My students persevere through communication challenges, including articulation disorders, fluency disorders, expressive and receptive language deficits, and difficulties with pragmatic/social skills.

This group of energetic students is always looking for dynamic ways to engage in their learning and have fun as they work to improve their communication skills.

Every student has exceptional talents and learning styles. Strong speech and language skills build a foundation for success in core subject areas, including math, science, reading, and language arts. With the right tools and strategies, these unique learners can become more active participants during speech therapy and in their core subject areas.

My Project

Our students typically receive speech therapy in groups. This require lots of patience when sharing small materials and addressing each student's individual goals. To strive for student success, we routinely consult with parents and fellow educators for IEP development and lesson planning aligned to the core standards. A projector and whiteboard will provide a large display for easier collaboration and brainstorming.

Both a projector and magnetic dry erase board can be attention-grabbing and engaging for students, as compared to pen and paper activities.

With a portable projector, such as the Sony Portable HD Mobile Projector, the students can participate in group activities more easily. This would support turn-taking and other social skills. A magnetic dry erase board would also allow students to collaborate during hands-on tasks. This is a great way to encourage physical activity—especially for our kinesthetic learners. Some of the students, who are visually impaired or have other special needs, can benefit from the magnified display offered by a projector.
