My students need a camera, photo printer and ink in order to make projects that capture their interest. For students with Autism, visuals are important for learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Visuals, pictures, and more visuals are heavily incorporated throughout my classroom to help build independence for my students with Autism, many of which struggle with receptive and expressive language skills.
My classroom is a self-contained Kindergarten and 1st grade classroom of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
My student population consists of 8 students who are eager to learn and are enthusiastic. Currently, most of my students struggle with communication and require visuals to be able to express their basic wants and needs.
My students all use an individual student schedule, which incorporates visuals and the student's picture, in order to ensure that all students in my classroom know where they need to be during the school day. The individual student schedule supports student independence and allows for less anxiety, since the child knows what activity of the day is next.
My Project
Much research supports the use of visuals and pictures to ensure independence and foster communication for students with Autism. The resources requested through Project ICE will help my students by providing them with more visuals and pictures. The student's pictures will be updated and of good quality.
The printer, camera, and ink will, also, be used to create hands-on projects that enhance academics. My students all have unique needs. Through the use of visually stimulating activities, many of their unique needs can be met and student growth can take place.
The use of visuals and pictures in a classroom of students with Autism can help reduce behaviors, promote independent living skills, improve communication, and enhance learning throughout a variety of different content areas.
I envision that my students, with the use of the camera, printer and ink, will create masterpieces that will catch their interest. In addition, I will utilize the pictures captured by the camera to photograph valuable moments that can be shared with parents and visitors.
