This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This is a project for ALLSTATE "Speak Out" mission of the month.
This project is for warm blankets.
There are two organizations we will be working with - one is called Alberto's Angels and the other is an organization called Project Blanket. Alberto's Angels helps kids at our local hospital (Monmouth Medical Center) who are fighting cancer. Alberto (who works in our district) had childhood cancer and gives back to MMC frequently. The other is Project Blanket (a local group) and that gives blankets away to those in need. They help teach people how to hand crochet. Making the blanket teaches kids a new skill, helps with hand-eye coordination as well as pattern building at the same time as strengthening their community bonds through community activism. They will learn about both of the organizations that give blankets away and why there is a need. My kids will have the ability to stay warm and give that same opportunity to others. They will make these blankets with love because they're doing their part to solve a problem while learning a new skill that they can take with them into adulthood.
As a teacher in a low-income school district, I want to provide all I can for my students to have the most memorable educational experience. We have over 1000 students in our school. Over 80% of them are receiving free or reduced-price lunch daily. Over half of the student body is Latino and we have an extremely large ESL population. Over 35% of my students are classified as special needs.
