Project-Based Solutions For Social and Academic Development
Help me give my students construction paper, adhesive gems, braiding yarn, and pony beads for hands-on pattern making experiences to improve math skills through friendships building experiences.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Four- and five-year-olds are curious hands-on learners. They need repetition and lots of hands-on practice to master foundational skills like sorting, patterning, and counting. Utilizing materials that students can hold, move, and manipulate helps them to sort, count, recognize, and create mathematical patterns, and creating patterns with a purpose gives them the motivation to create learn and build community all at the same time.
Your donation to this project will give students a project-based opportunity to physically count objects and use a variety of tools to sort, organize, copy, and create patterns so that they can build number sense, a building block for all mathematical concepts that will follow, while also expanding their community through gift giving.
Students will use the yarn and beads in this project to build an understanding of sorting and patterning by both copying model patterns provided to them and by creating patterns themselves while stringing together necklaces and bracelets.
Next, students will also use the adhesive gems on construction paper to create friendship cards and messages. To spread kindness throughout the school, build relationships with new friends, and experience the joy of random acts of kindness, students will distribute their bracelets and cards to other children throughout the school.
Your donation to this project will help students develop both foundational math skills and social emotional development through hands-on experiences that bring them together through random acts of kindness.
