Project Based Social Emotional Learning in the Elementary Classroom:

My Project
After 22 years in the classroom at the California School for the Deaf, I've transitioned into the role of student support liaison for the elementary department. Like all elementary students, Deaf kids benefit from learning social and emotional skills that help them regulate themselves, have positive interactions with peers and staff, learn tenacity and perseverance, and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Creating helps students express themselves, solve problems that come up in the making process, learn concepts in a fun and engaging way, ground difficult emotions, and develop communication and teamwork skills.
As a middle school teacher at the California School for the Deaf, I had a grant that funded award winning sewing projects that grew literacy skills in the bilingual language arts classes I taught. Now, in elementary, I'm needing supplies and tools students can use in projects that teach them social emotional skills like cooperation, teamwork, perseverance, trust, and confidence.
The sewing machines, tools and supplies I've requested will be used both for social emotional learning projects during school hours and also for enrichment activities during after school clubs. Making these projects will allow students to engage with each other in positive ways, but also build their coping skills as creative outlets calm and center them.
Aside from the sewing machines and basic sewing supplies, the felt, googly eyes, and pipe cleaners are for an SEL project based on the book "Love Monster" for the primary grades. The t-shirts are for projects the upper elementary grades will do, creating applique t-shirts that are original designs with social emotional learning messages and themes.
