My Students

This year I have the pleasure of teaching 6th-grade science. My students are always eager to learn and love lab days! They are full of questions and want to know the "why?" and "how?" of everything we talk about and learn. My classroom is a hands-on experience that most of my students haven't had the pleasure of experiencing in school yet. That is what makes it even more engaging and creative for them. My students have gone from "I don't think I am going to like your class." to "This is my favorite class this year!"

My Project

This summer I have the opportunity to improve student-driven projects that support Next Generation Science Standards in the classroom. I have been accepted to attend the Monterey Bay Aquarium summer program for teachers. We will learn about project-based science that will encourage our students to ask questions, make meaning from what they learn, and apply knowledge and skills in new contexts. The hands-on, collaborative nature of projects provides a learning experience that models best science-teaching practices and integrates Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core State Standards. I will return with skills and materials to employ project-based strategies and engage my students in authentic inquiry-based science as they investigate conservation issues connected to their lives and their environment.

While at the aquarium I will have an opportunity to purchase materials for my classroom.

There are currently two DVD's; Ocean Wonders: Inside the Monterey Bay Aquarium and The Art of Nature: Jellies, that I would like to purchase to show my students and use as a teaching tool for them. There are also several books for purchase that would enhance the learning and understanding of what I experienced to share with my students. I know that the gift shop will have puzzles and other educational materials that would be perfect for my class. During this summer program, teachers will be going out to Kayak and exploring a Tide Pool. I would like to be able to purchase items that go along with these lessons, for example, information on different aquatic animals we find.
