Project Based Learning Using Sensory Exploration

My Students

I have the privilege to teach children ages 3-5 years old. I have some students on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and some who are typically developing. Disabilities in my classroom include: Speech Language Impairment, Down syndrome, Autism, and Developmentally Delayed.

My students are curious about their environment and love to learn and explore new things.

Some of my students may not learn as quickly as other preschoolers, but I feel it is important to give them the opportunities to explore their surroundings, build friendships, provide positive praise throughout the day.

My Project

These items are fun and engaging and will give my students many more opportunities to explore and learn. Some of the items that I have chosen are: Touch and Feel Sensory Capsules, What's the sound Mystery Capsules, a Sensory Sand ice cream set, as well as many other sensory materials that can be used to create art and to explore along with our designed curriculum of study. We follow a Project Based Learning curriculum that covers such exploratory topics as: Tubes & tunnels, Insects, Boxes, Buildings, Music, etc....

My students enjoy project based learning as their questions and curiosity lead their discovery.

I plan on using these materials in multiple areas of study; such as: science, math, and literacy. For example I could use the "Touch and Feel Sensory Capsules" in the area of literacy as we explore items together and then find their beginning sounds. This could also work for finding their middle and ending sounds as well. I could use the "sensory dough, sensory paint, sensory slime" in the area of math as we talk about the size and shape of the things the students are creating. Another example could be using the peel and stick cubes in the area of science as the students are learning about buildings, then have the opportunity to be their own architect.

My students are so deserving of having the opportunity of exploring and discovering the world around them in new and creative ways. Many of my students have sensory processing issues and being able to use all of their senses to engage is an essential element of growth others can take for granted, thank you again for giving my students these exciting experiences.
