Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students learn best when they ask their own questions, set their own goals and can connect their learning to the real world. Inquiry based learning develops the imagination, critical thinking skills, creativity, cognitive skills, collaboration and allows children to appreciate other points-of-view.

I teach a group of 3rd grade, gifted students in an inner-city school in a large metropolitan city.

A large percentage of students at my school come from low-income households and thus all students have access to the free lunch program. Many students do not have access to technology that will help them succeed in today's world. My students are enthusiastic learners with a great deal of potential. My job is to inspire them by integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics and promote critical thinking skills. My role is to promote inquiry based learning, to incorporate their varied learning styles into team-building learning experiences that they can connect to the world around them.

My Project

The materials that I am requesting will integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics into our curriculum. The Citiblocks will allow my students to design mazes, structures and obstacles for our robot. The Dash robot will help my students learn about computer programming and robotics. This will provide students with a concrete, visual model of what they are creating and will help them learn more easily how to understand the logic behind computer programming and most importantly, how to connect these disciplines to the real world.

These tools will help my students apply critical thinking skills, problem solving skills and teamwork.

Interacting with something they create will promote their self-confidence and will inspire them to continue to create. These materials will demonstrate how Science, Math and Art are so closely integrated in real life. These materials will prepare my students to be tech-literate, an essential skill in today's world.
