Project-Based Learning in Math

Help me give my students Lego, wind-up toys, stopwatches, and measuring tapes to facilitate hands-on, project-based learning in Math.

My Project

"This is so boring!" "Why do I need to know this?" "Will I ever use this in real life?" "Bruh!" I cannot count the times I hear these statements/questions in the middle school math classroom each day. Getting buy-in from 13-year-olds is tough.

Help me provide the tools for Project-Based Learning to show my students real-world uses for Math, and encourage active engagement.

Their ability to learn via activity labs will help develop critical skills: problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration. Students apply what they’ve learned in a practical context, which helps reinforce and deepen their understanding of the material. Engaging in hands-on, meaningful projects can also lead to better long-term retention of information.

How will we use them:

- Lego is a great tool for teaching Fractions, Area, Perimeter, and Volume.

- Wind-up toys, stop watches, and measuring tapes are critical in studying Rate/Time/Distance.

- Pull-back cars help teach Proportional Relationships.

- Playing cards help students to understand Probability and Statistics.

- Presentation boards, chart paper, and in-room printer will give ALL students the means to share their ideas with the class.
