Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. I try to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. They all have autism, are language and speech impaired, and demonstrate behaviors linked to those who are unable to communicate.

I proudly teach children who are on the Autism Spectrum.

I teach students who are in a self-contained setting, non-verbal, can not write, and who have intense behavioral issues. My students do not engage in much physical activity. Some of them are extremely overweight and lethargic. They are in need of a change of lifestyle, one that is healthy emotionally and physically. Most of them have severe behaviors that impede their learning. Many of them get frustrated easily due to the inability to communicate. All of these factors play into the way they live on a daily basis. They struggle with things that come easy to their non-disabled peers.

My Project

Technology is one of the greatest links to the outside world for a child with Autism. There has been amazing breakthroughs with technology and children with Autism. This project would help my students with communicating their wants, needs and reaching their educational goals. The laptop and printer would be used daily for communicating the very basics such as asking to go to the bathroom to letting their teacher know they do not feel well. The student interactive curriculum linked to the state standard access courses would be uploaded into the laptop.

My students will be afforded the same opportunities as their non-disabled peers with this project.

My students who are not able to use a mouse will also benefit from the touchscreen. The laptop will be used for large group, small group and independent work. The ultimate goal of this project is to obtain a class set of these laptops, so that each student has their own. I teach Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Career Education, Social Skills and Physical Education. Unfortunately, there is no money in the school district for the type of technology needed for these children. They have the potential to learn and communicate effectively, but lack the equipment to do so. I am reaching out to you as an educator who truly wants to make a difference in the lives of my students.
