Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Title I school, over 95% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and 84% of them are second language learners. Still, our school is a Distinguished/Achieving School with an ongoing tradition of academic excellence. We believe each child is unique and deserving of a rich, educational atmosphere.
In most classrooms today, math questions are being discussed on the board with a whiteboard marker on hand. Depending on where a student is sitting, he or she might be blocked by the person who is writing on the board. In addition, most students wait around until the problem is solved to check their answer.
Thus, how can the teaching of math be improved? My solution is to use a wireless graphic tablet. When wirelessly connected to a projector, the visual creates a virtual paper that can be viewed by the whole class, unobstructed! Students can thus have a better opportunity to learn from their teachers and peers. It's a well-known phenomenon, students learn very well from each other. The tablet can become that tool that can promote student directed learning, through a creative, interactive and dynamic process.
Benefits of tablet technology, such as being able to refer back to previous material, keeping an exact high quality copy of previous problems and being able to post work on a website can help students keep connected with math. A class set of mini-whiteboards, markers, and erasers can also help keep all students engaged in the problem solving experience. They can compare their work to the work being displayed from the tablet.
Help me teach math in a progressive manner. Help me bring digital technologies to their desks so that they can become part of the learning process. It's common knowledge, technology raises student achievement and students learn by doing. Mix both together, and you have a powerful chemistry that can create positive effects in kids and reshape the culture and thinking of a 6th grade mind.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
