Progress You Can See: Swimming Team in Need of a Camcorder
My swimmers and divers need to be able to see how they are swimming and diving through the use of a camcorder, a camcorder battery, and a bag to carry it all in.
You can help be the catalyst for students to learn how to be competitive swimmers. Each year, high school students come out for my swimming and diving team who do not know anything about the sport. They are a mixture of freshman through seniors who mostly have not had the money to pay for swimming lessons earlier in their life. By the end of the season, they are competitive swimmers who not only have learned an important life skill, but who can have a sport that will keep them in shape for the rest of their lives.
The problem with students never having swum before, on a team that has not had a team for quite some time, is that at times our swimmers have a hard time understanding what it is that they are doing incorrectly. I can get into the pool to try to show them, but I would not be able to talk to the team while I am swimming.
By having a camcorder, the swimmers could be recorded while they are swimming so that I can talk to them as a team or one by one later as we watch the footage. Watching their strokes, swimmers will be able to better understand what it is that I am asking them to adjust in their strokes in order to make them more efficient, faster, successful swimmers.
Your help will not only make it possible for a group of students to learn the art of swimming, but it will give them a present to keep forever. They will have the gift of a life saving, healthy habit that they can carry around with them for the rest of their lives. An added bonus is that I will keep a separate DVD for each swimmer and diver that will show them performing at the beginning and end of each of their years on the high school swimming and diving team. During their senior awards banquet, I will show their first and last days of practice so they can view, with their family, truly how far they have come. The DVD will be given to each senior as a gift for their hard work and dedication.
